Six years old!

This blog is six years old!

I'd like to thank all my readers for the million visits this blog has had since I started writing, back in November 2009. This cake is for you!

And, as usual, I'm adding a selection of the cartoons of the week that I post every Sunday. They come from my usual sources: Wrong Hands, So much pun, Brainless tales and Cartoon Movement. They deal mainly with puns, but some of them are related to current affairs such as the terrible attacks in Paris. I hope you like them and I hope you keep reading this blog! Cheers!

Five years old!

Incredible but true! It's five years since I started this blog, and though I don't write entries as often as I used to, it's not because I've run out of ideas or topics to write about, but because I'm so busy!
Anyway, let's celebrate this fifth anniversary by having a look at the "cartoons of the week" I have posted over the last 52 weeks, with the exception of the summer months, when I don't always have access to the internet.

This year, I have come across a great blog in which I can find the type of cartoon I like (generally puns): Brainless Tales. Apart from this, I keep on using my usual sources: Wronghands, So much pun, etc. But, as you can see, not only puns have been used. There are also some cartoons that have to do with important current issues like the situation in Ukraine or the landing of Philae on Comet 67P. I hope you find them interesting!

Finally, I'd like to thank all the readers of this blog and the people who are so kind as to leave their comments. Thank you!

Four years old!

It's now four years since I started writing this blog and, to celebrate the anniversary, I always publish a presentation with the "cartoons of the week" of the last year. Most of these cartoons have been chosen because they are witty puns (I love puns!), but others are here to commemorate important events like the terrible typhoon that hit the Phillipines a couple of weeks ago.
The blogs and webpages that I usually visit for inspiration with the cartoons are the following:
I hope you like them too!

Finally, I would like to thank all the readers who have left comments on the entries and in general all the people who visit this blog. This is for you!

Three years old!

This blog is now three years old, and to celebrate it we are going to watch a presentation with the "cartoons of the week" for this year. Most of them have been taken from So much pun, others from Time, and others from two great blogs I've discovered recently:  Wrong hands and Liz Climo's blog.

Most of the cartoons that I use for my blog are puns. A pun is a play on words in which two words that sound alike or two different meanings of the same word are deliberately confused, resulting in a funny joke.

Let's have a look at a few cartoons:
Image
In this cartoon we have two different meanings of the word fan: a machine that creates a current of air and a person who is an enthusiastic follower of another person. What makes it funny is the fact that we can see the machine act like the follower. Now let's see another example:
Image
In this one we can see two words that are homophones, that is, they sound alike: weight and wait, and two different senses of the word lift (a polysemic word): to raise something or an elevator.

In the following image there are two meanings of the word tablet, even though it's not even mentioned: a pill (medication) and a portable computer. Isn't it ingenious?

Fancy seeing more cartoons? Here is the presentation that I mentioned before:

And finally, I want to thank all the followers and visitors of this blog, as well as my students, who give me the inspiration for writing it.

Two years old!

It was November 2009 when I started writing this blog. At the beginning it was just an assignment for a course on Web 2.0 I was doing, but it soon caught on me, and I kept writing about grammar points my students find difficult to understand, or cultural topics, because learning a language is not just a matter of grammar or vocabulary, but also of the habits and culture of the people that speak it.

I don’t write as often as I would like, which is not due to a lack of topics but to the lack of time, as my job and my family take up most of my time. Anyway, I always try to write at least once a month: I find it disappointing when the blogs I follow don’t get renewed in months. But what keeps a blog alive and kicking is not the person who writes it but the people who read it. So, a big thank you to all my readers! This wonderful cake is for you!

Here is a slide show with the “cartoons of the week” for the last twelve months. Most of them have been taken from Time, and others are from somuchpun.com. I hope you like them!
